Angle Drives
angle drives

Natural ability, nerve and attuned reflexes are all essentials, but these things are common to most good drivers. Playing it by ear is fine mostly. It’s knowing exactly what’s happening in there-the motor, the electrical system, transmission, every second-that counts.
Angle Drives and Ratio Boxes are used to alter rotation and ratio.
They also allow for application of a cable to tight area's.
It must be remembered that common speedometer cable of 3.2 or 3.8mm does not like to rotate in excess of 2700rpm.
Beyond this the cable will be subject to forces that might cause it to delaminate.
Earlier cars used 6mm cable which was less suseptable but generally speaking it is important to correct rotation, speed and direction as close as possible to the drive.

chronometric

Some Chronometric Speedometer's and Tachometer's had an internal angle drive. Often they were used for racing applications for tight spaces and generally were 1:1 ratio.
Morechronometric

The Vincent Speedometer had an angle drive incorporated into the frame of the speedometer. Recreations often have an angle drive screwed on to the outside thread of a common chronometric frame.
